what does the ywca mean to you?

Your generous past support enables the ywca greater newburyport to serve a wide range of women, men and children. Today, our mission work is more critical than ever to the health and social wellbeing of our community and we need your help to continue the momentum. Here are just a few examples of what the ywca means to our members:

to me, the ywca means a safe haven
Melinda hadn’t been in a bathing suit in 15 years. Recovering from gastric bypass surgery, she knew the next step to becoming healthy was incorporating exercise in her daily life. Melinda feels safe at the ywca: safe to focus on becoming healthy without judgment. And the staff was there to help. Now 12 months later, 128 pounds lighter, and 8 sizes smaller, Melinda says she feels stronger, healthier and younger. “I don’t know if I would have done as well without the ywca ,” she says. “I love it.”

to me, the ywca means camaraderie
Harvey, a teacher in Georgetown for 37 years, experiences intense back pain from arthritis. Swimming in the warm water pool at the ywca helps alleviate his pain. But it is the warm, friendly staff and camaraderie with members that lifts his spirits as well and keeps him and his wife returning everyday.

to me, the ywca means an advocate for equality
Rachael, a Board Member, knows it can be easy to forget the fight for empowerment and for eliminating racism when caught up in our busy lives. She comes to the ywca excited to act on her passion for social issues and eager to inspire young people in the way volunteer activism impacted her life when she was growing up.

This has been an extraordinary year. The economy has created an even greater demand for our mission-based programs like afterschool and child care programs and affordable housing for women and families. Now, more than ever, we need your help to ensure that our programs continue to thrive. Please think about what the ywca means to you and give generously. Together we will make our community a better place to live and work.

Sincerely,

Judy Tymon

The YWCA Greater Newburyport has been a partner in the community for 125-years. Here’s how the YW is impacting the lives of some of your neighbors today:

“Learn to Swim’ is a great program.
My grandson went from having a fear of putting his face into the water to complete immersion in a week’s time. Liz at the YWCA Greater Newburyport is a wonderful instructor.”
– Dianne B.

“After trying several childcare settings, I came to the YWCA. Not only do my two- and four-year-olds like it, they ask to go. I love that there is no TV and they are encouraged to have “free-play” as well as read, do puzzles and complete crafts. The staff are so kind and helpful. I have peace of mind when working out at the YWCA knowing that my children are exploring, learning and being nurtured only a few rooms away.
– Mary-Rita Visconti

“I am very grateful for the special grant for my YWCA wellness plan membership – it is the best birthday present I ever had. It has been wonderful to exercise without pain in the warm water pool! The grants are so important to us senior citizens who still try to stay healthy and in shape.”
– Beverly Jones, YWCA grant beneficiary, gift of the Newburyport Society for the Relief of Aged Women

“Our YW’ is back! Many of us seniors have made long-time friends at the YW and we missed them last year during construction.
A lot of us live alone and conversation is limited. At the YWCA pool we can do two things at once: exercise and talk. The new YWCA facility is wonderful - bright, clean and accessible. The instructors are capable, helpful and fun. This makes a big difference not only to the seniors, but to everyone using the pools.”
– Barbara Sanborn
