Head Swim Team Coach

full-time & part-time

Position Summary:  reporting to the aquatics manager, our head swim team coach is responsible for the overall organization, administration and coaching of the swim team.

Primary Accountabilities: drafting and administering the swim team’s competitive program including the scheduling duties of competitive season  (overseeing all meet entries and ensuring they are supervised by a qualified USA swimming coach, assisting in the selection of individual’s meet events and the development of the team’s meet schedule including advising the team of any changes in the team practice schedule one week prior to change); recruiting and supervising assistant coaches; assisting in the design and oversight of seasonal training plans for all swimmers’ swim lessons  (practice plans should include stroke selection/technique, dry land and other current techniques, fundamentals of starts, flip turns, and finishes, and pertinent rules/regulations); coaching swimmers at the highest level of competitions available and in accordance with their desired level of participation; providing, at a minimum, four days of coaching for a minimum of two hours Monday through Saturday (coaching above and beyond these times will be considered and must be agreed upon and approved by the aquatics manager); assisting in the implementation and direction of a parent education program; functioning as the media contact liaison for major team events as required; working with the aquatics manager to ensure the pool schedule supports swim team practice, lane requirements, and pool heaters/filtration/chemical issues are sufficient to support team practices; embracing and supporting the ywca greater newburyport’s health and wellness culture in promoting all programs throughout the facility to foster optimal wellness for all members and the community as a whole; working with the parent board and volunteers; attending all relevant meetings (i.e. team meetings, local swim committee meetings, parent meetings) and inform staff and athletes of pertinent information; maintaining required certifications and pursuing professional development that will further develop skills and competencies; performing administrative tasks (i.e. generating the team newsletter, assisting with fundraising activities, and aiding with travel arrangements); and assuming additional responsibilities as determined by the board and/or the aquatics manager.

Position Qualifications: current First Aid/CPR for the Professional Rescuer and USS Safety training certifications required; ASCA certification preferred (or ability to obtain designation); expertise as a competitive swimmer and stroke proficiency a must; two years experience as a swim coach preferred; and computer literacy and knowledge of  Hy-Tek’s Meet Manager and Team Manager required.

Our successful candidate, in addition to possessing the above qualifications, will have demonstrated dependability, effective analytical and decision making capabilities, ability to work independently, effective response in performing well under stress related situations, strong communication/relationship building skills, and ability to foster the development of individuals to progress from level to level.
