American Red Cross LIFEGUARD TRAINING CERTIFICATION COURSE and re-certification course

The YWCA Greater Newburyport is excited to announce that we will be offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification Course in our pool. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive:

• Lifeguard Training and First Aid certification, valid for 3 years and
• CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification, valid for 1 year.

The courses will be held on the following dates: December, February and April:

December 27-30, 2010 8:00am – 5:00pm
     Registration Deadline December 17th
February 22-25, 2011 8:00am – 5:00pm
     Registration Deadline February 11th
April 18-21, 2011 8:00am – 5:00pm
     Registration Deadline April 8th

Fee: Member $300 | Non-Member $350
Fee includes: a $100 non refundable materials and registration fee. There is a 4 person minimum for the class to run. Click here for print friendly flyer.

Prerequisite testing will be completed during the first class of the session. In order to participate in the course, candidate must: be at least 15 yrs old on or before the last date of the course and must:

• Complete a 300-yard swim: 100 yard front crawl, 100 yard breaststroke,
  100 yard front crawl or breast stroke.
• Complete a 20 yard swim, surface dive, retrieve a 10 lb brick at the surface of the water or above it in a time limit of 1 minute and 40 seconds.

*Goggles may be worn during the 300 yard swim only and not during the brick swim

If participant does not pass the prerequisite test, a refund will be issued less the $100 materials fee, or the participant may take the class again within 6 months. If participant does not pass the course, she/he may take the class again within 6 months. No refunds will be given for course failure.

Materials Provided:

• 1 Lifeguard Training Book
• 1 Resuscitation Mask
• 1 pair latex-free gloves

Students are required to bring their own bathing suit, towel, writing utensils and a comfortable change of clothes. We suggest the student bring a snack.

• Complete a 300-yard swim: 100 yd front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick. 100 yd breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence. 100 yd either front crawl or breaststroke and may be
  a combination of front crawl and breaststroke.
• Complete a 20 yd swim using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 lb brick, return to the surface, and swim with it 20 yd back with both hands on the brick then exit the side of the pool. This skill must
  be completed within a time of 1 minute and 40 seconds.
• Complete a 500 yard swim: 200 yd front crawl using rhythmic and a stabilizing, propellant kick. 200 yd breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence. 100 yd either front crawl or breaststroke and may be
  a combination of front crawl and breaststroke. (For waterfront certification)
• Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water; resurface and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool. (For waterfront certification) *Goggles may be worn during the 300 swim only and not during the brick swim or any other portion of the course

If participant does not pass the prerequisite test, a refund will be issued less the $100.00 materials fee, or the participant may take the class again within 6 months. If participant fails the course, the participant may take the class again within 6 months. No refunds will be given for course failure.

Students will be expected to bring their own bathing suit, towel, writing utensils and comfortable change of clothes. They should also bring their Lifeguard Training Book, Resuscitation Mask and copy of their old certification.
