YWCA Children’s Center

YWCA Greater Newburyport’s Children’s Center creates a community engaged in the joy and wonder of childhood.  We strive to support a diverse community by providing quality, affordable childcare that nourishes early childhood development.

Nicole Brennan, YWCA Children’s Center Director

The Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care licensed YWCA Children’s Center gives parents the freedom to pursue their professional goals while their children participate in safe, affordable, quality programs. Children have the opportunity to explore, discover, and expand their cognitive and social skills in a caring, supportive environment.

The YWCA Children’s Center is located at the YWCA Greater Newburyport’s Pond Street branch in Newburyport. The center offers full and half daycare for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Families can choose the number of days they enroll based on their individual needs.

Our Philosophy

We provide a warm, caring atmosphere where children are accepted unconditionally. All programs are inclusive, open to all children regardless of color, race, economic status, religious background, or family composition. Staff members strive to create an environment that is a careful balance between reliable security and stimulation that fosters exploration and growth.

Economic Diversity

This program is offered on a sliding fee basis.  The sliding fee provides up to a 40% discount based on household income.  State issued child care vouchers are also accepted.

Our Activities and Curriculum

The YWCA Children’s Center is a place for children to discover, explore, and create. Whether smiling at a new friend, cooking in the dramatic play area, or painting at the easel, the YWCA Children’s Center will promote hands-on learning through play. The curriculum offered at the YWCA Children’s Center is open-ended and child-driven. We use an educational tool, Teaching Strategies Gold, as a guide for our curriculum and assessment enabling educators to set individual developmental goals for each child.

We are very excited about our outdoor environment. The outdoor learning environment includes gardens, open spaces for games and movement, table areas for art, science and eating, sensory play areas, and “roads” for trikes and scooters. Children spend a substantial part of each day in this natural play area.

Infant/Toddler Program

The YWCA infant/toddler program provides a safe nurturing environment in which children are supported as they grow and develop. Our primary caregivers take cues from babies and toddlers as they move through the day. Eating, napping, and playing happen as the individual needs arise. Children interact in small groups and can discover independently all under the guidance of our loving, skilled educators. Our infant and toddler’s days include such activities as storytime, sensory exploration, science discovery, outdoor investigation, creative arts, and much more. Most importantly, all our infants and toddlers have fun in a safe, positive environment.

Pre-school Program

Our preschool program provides a safe, interactive environment in which children grow as learners through discovery, exploration, and creativity. The educators guide the children in developing appropriate social skills to inspire positive relationships. In our multi-age classrooms, children can be a mentor to a young child and a learner with an older child. Preschoolers have the opportunity to move throughout the classrooms in small groupings and independently. Our Educators know that each child has a unique learning style. For that reason, we individualize our curriculum to meet each child’s needs and goals. Your preschooler’s curriculum includes literacy, age-appropriate math and science concepts, social and emotional development, and much more. Your preschooler will be learning and thriving in an educationally rich environment.
