YWCA Children’s Center
YWCA Children’s Center
Located at the YWCA Greater Newburyport’s Pond Street branch in Newburyport, the YWCA Children’s Center offers care for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
The YWCA Children’s Center is licensed by The Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care. The YWCA Children’s Center gives families the flexibility and peace of mind they need to pursue their professional and personal goals while their children learn, grow, and thrive in a safe, affordable, and nurturing environment.
Our center provides children with opportunities to explore, discover, build new skills, and develop meaningful relationships with teachers and friends. Through play-based learning and intentional experiences, we support each child’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development.
We are proud to provide a warm, welcoming environment where children feel safe, supported, and excited to learn each day.
Nicole Brennan, Early Education Director
Our Philosophy
The YWCA Children’s Center is a community where children, families, and educators learn, grow, and thrive together. We believe children flourish in a warm, nurturing environment that recognizes and supports their individual needs, interests, and development.
As educators, we create an engaging and supportive environment that encourages growth across the primary areas of development, including social-emotional, physical, and cognitive development. We value each child as an individual and strive to provide meaningful experiences that encourage curiosity, confidence, independence, and a love of learning.
We believe strongly in the importance of the home-center connection. Building strong, positive relationships with families is an essential part of our work. We strive to maintain open communication, share positive feedback and important updates, and work together with families to support each child’s growth and well-being.
The mission of the YWCA is woven into everything we do. Through our sliding fee scale, individualized curriculum, and strong home-center partnerships, the YWCA Children’s Center remains committed to creating an inclusive community grounded in equity, justice, dignity, and respect for all children and families.
Economic Diversity
The YWCA Children’s Center offers a sliding fee scale, providing eligible families with a discounted rate based on household income. We also accept state-issued childcare vouchers to help make quality childcare more accessible and affordable for families.
Our Activities and Curriculum
The YWCA Children’s Center is a place where children are encouraged to discover, explore, create, and learn. Whether they are smiling and connecting with a new friend, cooking in the dramatic play area, or painting at the easel, children are engaged in hands-on learning experiences throughout their day.
Our curriculum is open-ended and child-driven, allowing children to follow their interests, make choices, ask questions, and explore at their own pace. Teachers thoughtfully support and extend children’s learning through play, meaningful interactions, and developmentally appropriate experiences.
We are especially proud of our outdoor learning environment, where children have the opportunity to learn and explore in a natural, engaging setting.
Our outdoor space includes gardens, open areas for games and movement, tables for art, science, and meals, sensory play areas, and “roads” for trikes and cars.
Children spend a substantial part of each day outdoors, using this space to build physical skills, develop friendships, explore nature, and continue their learning through play and discovery.
Infant/Toddler Program
The YWCA Children’s Center’s infant and toddler program provides a safe, warm, and nurturing environment where children are supported as they grow, develop, and discover the world around them.
Our educators are attentive to each child’s individual cues, interests, and needs, allowing the day to unfold at a pace that is responsive to each child.
Eating, napping, playing, and exploring happen according to each child’s individual schedule. Children have opportunities to interact in small groups, build relationships with their teachers and friends, and explore independently, all with the guidance and support of our caring, skilled educators.
Each day includes a variety of developmentally appropriate experiences, including storytime, sensory exploration, science and discovery, outdoor exploration, creative arts, music and movement, and much more. Most importantly, our infants and toddlers are given plenty of opportunities to play, laugh, explore, and have fun while feeling safe, secure, and cared for.
Pre-school Program
Our preschool program provides a safe, engaging, and interactive environment where children grow as confident learners through discovery, exploration, creativity, and play. Our educators thoughtfully guide children as they develop social-emotional skills, build positive relationships, and become increasingly independent.
Our multi-age classrooms provide children with opportunities to learn from and support one another. Younger children benefit from the modeling and encouragement of older peers, while older children have opportunities to develop confidence and leadership skills by helping and mentoring younger children.
Throughout the day, preschoolers have opportunities to learn and explore in small groups as well as independently. Our educators recognize that every child has a unique learning style, interests, strengths, and areas for growth. We individualize our curriculum and teaching approaches to meet each child’s individual needs and learning goals.
Your preschooler’s curriculum includes early literacy, age-appropriate math and science concepts, social-emotional development, creative arts, and opportunities for problem-solving, communication, and critical thinking. Through meaningful, hands-on experiences, children are encouraged to ask questions, make connections, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
At the YWCA Children’s Center, preschoolers are supported, challenged, and encouraged to learn and thrive in a rich and nurturing educational environment.
