Racial Justice

At the core of YWCA Greater Newburyport—and sister YWCAs across the U.S. and around the globe—are racial justice efforts that break down internal and external barriers to racial equality and challenge our communities to move toward equity in the workplace, housing, education, and all aspects of life.

21 Day Racial Justice Challenge

The YWCA Greater Newburyport joins YWCA USA annually for the Racial Justice Challenge.

Racial Justice Committee

Chaired by a high school member of the YWCA Board of Directors, this committee, made up of community members and YWCA Board members, spearheads the racial justice work of our YWCA. The group plans public events such as the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration as well as other educational and awareness activities throughout the year. Our efforts include collaborating with other community organizations to strengthen and expand our efforts. If you are interested in joining this committee please contact Ilene H. Black History Month

YWCA is excited to celebrate Black History Month

The 2025 Black History Month theme, “African Americans and Labor,” is a powerful reflection on the pivotal role that the hard work of African Americans has played in shaping our country’s history. This theme underscores the diverse and significant ways in which labor—whether voluntary or involuntary, skilled or unskilled—has been at the core of the Black American experience. From the agricultural labor of enslaved Africans, which was foundational to the economic systems of this country, to the prosperous establishment of “Black Wall Street” which was a demonstration of the brilliance and resilient abilities of black corporate collaboration, this theme highlights how work has been central to both survival and empowerment.

This year’s theme also touches on how self-help strategies and entrepreneurship in Black communities have provided avenues for economic autonomy and resilience as embraced by the Kwanzaa Principle of “Ujamaa” (cooperative economics). The role of organized labor in challenging both economic and social injustices is highlighted, showcasing how collective action among Black workers has been instrumental in advancing social and political rights. This is a time of reflection on the importance of the Principle of “Ujima” (collective work and responsibility).

By focusing on “African Americans and Labor,” Black History Month in 2025 aims to celebrate and honor these profound contributions, shedding light on how work, both historically and present-day, continues to shape the identity, culture, and economic status of our communities. Let this time of reflection and celebration empower us towards a bright and successful future as we continue to walk and work in our “Nia” (purpose).

We welcomed over 200 to Newburyport City Hall for a morning filled with justice, dignity and freedom from Key Note Speaker: Dr. Angel Jones, Nancy E. Peace Recipient: Reverend Rebecca Bryan (along with Benediction), Rabbi Alex Matthews (Blessing), Poet Rhina Espaillat, and wonderful songs from vocalists Christian Cornelio. Thank you all for coming. We look foward to seeing you next year.

Advocacy

YWCA Greater Newburyport’s Advocacy Committee is comprised of YWCA staff, board members, and community members who are enthusiastic about our mission: to promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all while eliminating racism and empowering women. Our committee has received national support so that we can create programming, participate in events, and mobilize to meet the needs of our marginalized community.

Community Awards and Scholarships

Nancy Peace Action Against Prejudice Award

Established in 1998, the Nancy Peace Action Against Prejudice Award honors adults and youth who, through their professional or volunteer efforts, have advanced racial equity, challenged prejudice, and celebrated diversity. Presented annually at the YWCA’s Martin Luther King, Jr. event, the award recognizes individuals who embody the YWCA mission of peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Nominees must live or work within the YWCA Greater Newburyport service area.

Nancy DiGrezio Memorial Scholarship

Created in 2007 in memory of former YWCA Board Member and social justice advocate Nancy DiGrezio, this annual scholarship recognizes a graduating high school senior who demonstrates leadership, promotes tolerance and understanding, and inspires peers to stand against discrimination. The scholarship celebrates Nancy’s legacy of advocacy, peace, and community impact.

Connie Grasso Award

Established in 2015, the Connie Grasso Award honors individuals who have made a positive impact on their community by advancing women’s health and wellness. Inspired by Connie’s dedication to programs supporting breast cancer survivors and those managing chronic disease, the award recognizes community members who share her passion for improving the lives and well-being of others.
