Thank you for attending our Annual MLK Day Commemoration & Day of Service

This year’s MLK Commemoration theme- “Standing Strong: Our Beloved Community”-  honors Dr. King’s vision of justice, equality, and shared responsibility, and invites us to reflect on how we continue that work together.

We were delighted to welcome Dr. Angel Jones as our keynote speaker. Dr. Jones is a first-generation Afro-Latina educator, scholar, and activist whose work examines the impact of racism on mental health. She is also the author of Street Scholar: Using Public Scholarship to Educate, Advocate, and Liberate (Peter Lang). Check out Dr. Angel Jones on Instagram and you can purchase a copy of her book HERE.

The Commemoration also included the presentation of the Nancy E. Peace “Action Against Prejudice” Award to Reverend Rebecca Bryan (who also read our Benediction), a blessing by Rabbi Alex Matthews, poetry by Rhina P. Espaillat, and a musical performance (and impromptu singalong!) by Christian Cornelio.

Following the Commemoration, attendees were invited to participate in a Day of Service with community partners including Amesbury Racial & Social Justice, Our Neighbor’s Table, and The Salvation Army. Volunteers sorted pallets at the ONT warehouse in Salisbury, assembled care kits for our unhoused neighbors who utilize the Salvation Army Emergency Shelter, and crafted paper friendship quilt squares for a public art installation at our Pond Street childcare facility!

You can learn more about Dr. Angel Jones’ work at her website: www.angeljonesphd.com.

We hope to see you all next year!

The YWCA Belongs To Everyone: Donate Today!

At a time when the world feels increasingly divided, the YWCA Greater Newburyport is choosing a different path. We are choosing welcome, connection, and community… because the YWCA belongs to everyone.

But we cannot do our amazing work without your financial support.

Your generosity directly strengthens the programs that so many in our community rely on. Keeping our doors open (in every sense) requires a community that believes in this mission. Your new or renewed gift ensures that the YWCA remains a lifeline and a force for change for women, children, and families across Greater Newburyport.

Thank you for standing with us—and for helping us continue this work grounded in peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

– Kate Slater, Ph.D. (Executive Director)

We seek to integrate our mission into all our programs

YWCA Programs

Affordable Housing

Since 1885 YWCA has provided affordable housing.  Today, we manage 68 units in Amesbury, Newburyport, and Salisbury.  Almost half of our units serve homeless households. We are advocates of expanding affordable housing as well as fair housing.

Health & Wellness

YWCA provides a supportive environment for people of all ages to improve their health through group exercise, lap swimming, and a fitness center.  YWCA Encore is a free program for those with cancer combining gentle exercise and peer support.

Pre-School Childcare

Our licensed program offers full daycare to infants through preschoolers. Caring professionals, using Teaching Strategies Gold Curriculum, help children learn, grow and play. YWCA provides a discount based on a family’s ability to pay.

School-Aged Childcare

YWCA focuses on the social-emotional development of students in grades K-3. We infuse our mission into the curriculum to expand student’s awareness of social and racial justice. Students explore a wide range of activities with experienced staff.

Aquatics

Swimming is a life skill that can also improve self-esteem. YWCA offers swimming lessons for all ages beginning at 6 months to adult. Jr. Breakers swim team provides a non-competitive option beyond swim lessons. Coached masters is available for adults.
